Description:
Rota Primary School, located on the scenic shores of Lake Victoria in South West Kisumu Ward, underwent a comprehensive reconstruction to address the deteriorated state of its buildings and facilities. This transformation was made possible through the Kisumu Urban Project (KUP) in collaboration with the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), which served as the primary financier.
Situated in a Peri-urban neighborhood, the redesigned school aims to create a modern and inclusive learning environment that fosters positive interaction among teachers, students, and parents. As part of the KUP Model Schools Program—encompassing Angira, Thim Bonde, Got Nyabondo, and Rweya primary schools—Rota Primary School sets a standard for educational infrastructure in the region.
Key improvements include the construction of modern classroom blocks, an administration block, Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) classrooms, a kitchen and dining shed, and enhanced sports facilities. These additions address the challenge of urban migration by providing high-quality educational resources closer to home, reducing overcrowding in Kisumu city schools.
The project also incorporated sustainable features such as a solid waste management system with a bio digester and an on-site freshwater borehole to ensure clean water supply. Previous flooding issues caused by heavy rains and proximity to Lake Victoria were resolved by raising the general ground level of the new structures.
To benefit the surrounding community, commercial spaces were strategically positioned near the main gate to meet local needs. The master plan carefully considered the terrain and preserved existing trees, integrating them harmoniously into the school’s layout.
